In Switzerland, the canton of Thurgau is also popularly referred to as Mostindien". The component "Most" (cider) refers to Thurgau's status as a cider-producing region, whereas the connection with "Indien" comes from the shape of the canton resembling that of India. In actual fact, this name refers to Upper Thurgau, where extensive orchards (apples and pears) have been established since the late Middle Ages and where primarily cider or juice are produced.
